October in Destin means giant fish, waterfront celebrations, seafood festivals, and a month packed with Rodeo traditions. Plan your trip with this complete 2026 guide.
Yes, visiting Destin during the fall is a great idea. The beaches are less crowded, the weather is pleasant, and it’s prime time for outdoor activities. But what truly defines the town throughout October is something closely tied to its title as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village”: the Destin Fishing Rodeo.
Now entering its 78th year, this month-long fishing tournament is a cornerstone of the Gulf Coast fishing calendar. What started in 1948 as a way to extend the tourist season has evolved into a community-wide celebration that attracts more than 30,000 anglers annually. Throughout October, the harbor fills with charter captains, competitive fishermen, families, seafood lovers, and curious visitors hoping to witness some of the biggest catches of the year.
The best part? You don’t need to fish to enjoy it. Between the daily weigh-ins, harbor events, family activities, seafood festivals, costume parties, and waterfront celebrations, the Destin Fishing Rodeo invites everyone to join in on the fun and enjoy everything it has to offer.
Planning a Destin trip in October 2026? In this blog post, I’ll guide you through everything you need to know about this year’s Rodeo. If you’re planning to participate as an angler or just visiting with your family to experience one of Destin’s most vibrant annual events, you’ll find all the key details right here.

What Is the Destin Fishing Rodeo?
Held every October, the Destin Fishing Rodeo is one of the largest saltwater fishing tournaments in the Gulf. Anglers compete across dozens of species and divisions throughout the month, with more than $100,000 in prizes awarded by the time the competition concludes.
Unlike many tournaments that are reserved for serious competitors, the Rodeo welcomes everyone. Charter fishermen, private boat owners, children, recreational anglers, and even first-time visitors can participate. The event is so ingrained in Destin’s identity that many families plan annual vacations around it.
Of course, the tournament itself is only part of the appeal. Much of the excitement happens back at the harbor, where crowds gather daily to see what comes back from the Gulf.
What’s New for 2026?
The biggest story surrounding the 2026 Rodeo is the return of Red Snapper to the leaderboard for the first time since 2013.
For local anglers, this is a major development. Due to federal and state fishing regulations, special divisions have been created to keep the competition fair. Federal for-hire vessels can weigh Red Snapper from October 1 through October 25, while private recreational boats and state guide vessels are limited to Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays throughout the month.
Another important addition to this year’s calendar is Bruce Cheves Day on October 16. The event honors the longtime weighmaster whose presence shaped the Rodeo for more than four decades. His legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of the tournament and the Destin fishing community.
The 2026 Rodeo will also continue newer traditions such as the Miss Destin Mingle and the increasingly popular Oddball Division, which allows anglers to compete with unusual legal species not already represented in the tournament record books.

The Weigh-Ins Are the Main Attraction
Even visitors with no interest in fishing end up spending an afternoon at the weigh-ins.
Every day from October 1 through October 31, fish are weighed behind AJ’s Seafood & Oyster Bar between 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Some days you’ll see impressive snapper and grouper. Other days might bring giant tuna, wahoo, sharks, or even marlin weighing hundreds of pounds. If you want to experience the weigh-ins at their best, the action typically peaks between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., when most charter boats return to the harbor. Best of all, it’s completely free.
The 2026 Destin Fishing Rodeo Schedule: Events Worth Planning Around
September 25–27: Destin Seafood Festival
The Destin Seafood Festival the unofficial start of Rodeo season. Taking place the weekend before the tournament begins, this three-day waterfront celebration stretches nearly two miles along the Destin Harbor Boardwalk and brings together fresh seafood, live music, local artists, and family-friendly entertainment.
More than 100 food and craft vendors participate each year, giving you the chance to sample local favorites such as Gulf shrimp, oysters, crab cakes, and fresh-caught fish. If you’re coming with the entire vacation crew, you’ll find plenty to keep younger visitors entertained as well, thanks to kids’ zones featuring inflatables, climbing walls, pony rides, petting zoos, zip lines, painting workshops, and other activities spread throughout the harbor.
September 29: Captains and Mates Meeting & Reel Local Kick-Off Party
The tournament preparations officially begin with the Captains and Mates Meeting at AJ’s Seafood & Oyster Bar. Registration opens at 4:00 p.m., followed by the mandatory meeting at 5:00 p.m., where captains receive tournament materials, angler information cards, and updates regarding any rule changes.
Once the business side wraps up, the atmosphere shifts into celebration mode with the annual Reel Local Kick-Off Party beginning at 6:00 p.m. Expect live music, harbor views, and plenty of anticipation as anglers prepare for a month of competition.
October 1: Opening Day
The 78th Annual Destin Fishing Rodeo officially gets underway on October 1. For participating anglers, the race begins immediately to land the coveted First Fish of the Rodeo, one of the tournament’s most celebrated early achievements.
This year’s opening week is particularly exciting thanks to the return of Red Snapper to the leaderboard for the first time in over a decade.

Daily Throughout October: The Famous Weigh-Ins
The weigh-ins are the social center of the Rodeo. As mentioned earlier, they run every day from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., allowing you to watch trophy catches being weighed, photographed, and recorded.
October 4: Destin 5K Rodeo Run
Fishing isn’t the only competition happening this month. The Destin 5K Rodeo Run takes runners through some of Destin’s historic neighborhoods and helps raise funds for the Miss Destin Scholarship Fund.
October 12: Kids Fall Movie Festival
Families visiting during Columbus Day weekend should make time for AJ’s Kids Fall Movie Festival. The little ones can enjoy a free movie on AJ’s JumboTron along with complimentary snacks and treats.
October 16: Bruce Cheves Day
This is an important date on the 2026 calendar. Bruce Cheves Day celebrates the life and legacy of the legendary weighmaster who is synonymous with the Rodeo for over four decades.
The day concludes with the Ringing of the Bell ceremony at 5:00 p.m., honoring members of the fishing community lost during the year.
October 17: Larry Hatchett Fishing Foundation Day
This special event introduces children from foster situations to fishing, marine conservation, and local marine habitats through educational and hands-on experiences.
October 18 or 19: Rootin Tootin Rodeo Roundup
Young anglers ages 12 and under receive fishing gear, instruction, and the opportunity to fish from the Okaloosa Island Pier. If you’d like to introduce fishing to younger kids, save this date. For many local families, it’s an annual Rodeo tradition.
Every Saturday: Shark Saturdays
Every Saturday features a competition for the largest shark brought to the scales. These weigh-ins draw some of the biggest crowds of the tournament and are especially popular with younger visitors.
October 24: Miss Destin Mingle
Current and former Miss Destin titleholders gather for a harbor cruise and appearances at the weigh-ins, continuing one of the Rodeo’s newer traditions.

October 31: Halloween on the Harbor
The final day of competition doubles as the harbor’s biggest costume party. Anglers, families, locals, and visitors all join this Halloween celebration, Destin-style, and the wrap-up of another incredible Rodeo, complete with plenty of food, music, and conversation.
November 5: Awards Ceremony
The Rodeo officially concludes at AJ’s Seafood & Oyster Bar with the annual awards ceremony, where more than $100,000 in prizes are distributed across dozens of categories and divisions.
How to Participate
Thinking about joining the action? Getting involved is simpler than you might think.
If you’re fishing aboard a registered charter boat, you’re automatically covered by the captain’s registration and don’t need to complete any additional paperwork. For many visitors, this is the easiest way to join the competition.
Private boat owners must register their vessel at least 24 hours before weighing in a fish. Registration can be completed online, by mail, or in person during the Captains and Mates Meeting.
Visitors fishing from the shore, jetties, bridges, or piers can also participate. Anglers 15 and older pay a small fee, and children 14 and under can enter for free.
Where to Stay Close to the Action
There are plenty of Destin vacation rentals that are the cherry on top if you’re visiting town during the Rodeo.
If your goal is to immerse yourself in the Rodeo experience, staying near Destin Harbor is your best option. The HarborWalk Village area puts you within walking distance of AJ’s Seafood & Oyster Bar, the weigh-ins, restaurants, and many of the month’s biggest events.
Families love staying in Holiday Isle or Crystal Beach since both provide excellent beach access and are just a short drive from the harbor. Many visitors planning longer stays opt for the Mid-Bay area, where accommodations are often more affordable and easier to secure during October’s busy season.
Local tip: Because the opening weekend, Seafood Festival weekend, and Halloween weekend are particularly popular, booking accommodations two to three months in advance is highly recommended.
