Experience 30A beyond the postcards with hidden beaches, rare coastal dune lakes, beloved local restaurants, scenic trails, and smart insider tips.

We all love the postcard version of 30A. But we know very well that many visitors don’t really come here to spend their days at the busiest beaches, wait in line at restaurants everyone talks about on social media, or visit overhyped spots filled with influencers creating content instead of truly soaking in the moment.

They want to experience 30A the same way the locals do. I’m talking about lesser-known beach accesses tucked between neighborhoods, state parks boasting almost untouched shorelines, and local eateries where familiar faces matter more than Instagram followers.

Want to find those spots? In this guide, I’ll share what locals recommend if you want to experience this stunning part of Florida the way they do. The best part? None of these suggestions require venturing far from the places everyone already visits. They’re simply different choices, made at the right time and in the right places.

But before we get to the local recs, here’s a little about us:

At
Emerald Coast Vacation Rentals, we’re local experts, and besides offering a collection of fantastic Destin vacation rentals and 30A vacation rentals for a one-of-a-kind stay, we also have great local tips to help you make the most of your time here.

Head over to our blog. We’ve covered topics like interesting and fun facts about the region, the best restaurants, and pet-friendly spots. And guess what? More amazing blogs are coming soon, so stay tuned!

1. Don’t Stay Inside the Same Beach Town. See More of 30A.

It’s very common for visitors to 30A to pick one beach town, unpack the car, and barely leave for the rest of the week. There’s so much more to 30A just a few minutes from the place you’ve chosen as your base. Locals have the privilege of living surrounded by beautiful communities practically on their doorstep, and they’re always exploring beyond the one they call home.

Each community along 30A has its personality, and part of the fun comes from moving between them rather than settling into just one. Some of the most-popular 30A destinations include

Here’s a brief breakdown of some of the most popular 30A communities:

  • Grayton Beach: Often called the “soul of 30A,” it is a funky, artsy “hippie” community famous for the slogan “Nice dogs, strange people” and the iconic Red Bar.

  • Rosemary Beach: Designed with a “Dutch West Indies meets French Quarter” style, it features cobblestone streets and a romantic, old-world European vibe.

  • Seaside: The birthplace of “New Urbanism,” this world-famous town is characterized by its pastel-colored cottages and served as the cinematic backdrop for The Truman Show.

  • Seagrove: Situated in the “middle” of 30A, it is known for its lush canopy of oak trees and a peaceful environment that blends historical beach cottages with modern homes.

  • WaterSound: A private, gated community that is home to “The Big Chill” (formerly The Hub), a major outdoor entertainment venue for families.

  • Alys Beach: This community is visually striking for its stark white, Mediterranean-inspired architecture and courtyard-style homes that evoke the feel of a Greek coastal village.

  • Seacrest Beach: A more casual and laid-back area that features Peddler’s Pavilion, offering a variety of shops and dining options in a family-oriented setting.

  • Inlet Beach: Marking the eastern end of 30A, it offers a relaxed atmosphere and a mix of cozy condos and modern homes within walking distance of the high-end eastern towns.

2. Don’t Drive Everywhere. Join the Two-Wheel Crowd.

Nothing announces “first-time visitor” faster than sitting in traffic along 30A searching for another parking space. Residents figured out long ago that there’s a much better way to get around 30A.

Most leave the car parked and get around by bicycle, using the 19-mile Timpoochee Trail that links the area’s beach communities. It turns what could have been another slow drive into a day filled with spontaneous stops at local cafés, beach accesses, parks, and charming neighborhoods.

3. Don’t Settle for the Busiest Beach. Find the Accesses the Locals Use.

There’s nothing wrong with Seaside or Rosemary Beach. Their beaches tend to be busier than those in other communities, but nothing close to the overwhelming crowds you’ll find at some of Florida’s most popular destinations.

Residents often skip the main beach entrances altogether in favor of neighborhood accesses that most visitors drive straight past. Since many don’t provide public parking, they naturally stay under the radar. Pelayo Access, for instance, is a favorite among cyclists for exactly that reason.

Montgomery Street and Dogwood-Thyme are pretty easy to miss because they’re tucked discreetly into Seagrove neighborhoods, and Fort Panic Road, on the western end of 30A, continues to be overlooked despite offering the same sugar-white sand and emerald water people travel across the country to see.

4. Don’t Assume Every Beach Looks the Same. Visit the State Parks.

It’s funny to think that many tourists overlook the state parks, since they showcase a part of the Sunshine State that’s wonderfully untouched, peaceful, and perfect for immersing yourself in nature. And that’s exactly where 30A residents go when they need to decompress.

  • Deer Lake State Park, a beloved spot among locals, is home to a long boardwalk winding through protected dunes before opening onto a stretch of beach that’s similar to nearby Grayton Beach but with far fewer people in sight.

  • Topsail Hill Preserve State Park is another great pick for visitors looking for a different side of 30A. Beyond its uncrowded shoreline lie old-growth pine forests and peaceful natural scenery where you’ll feel worlds away from the busiest beach communities.

If you’re craving a slower morning, Eden Gardens State Park provides yet another change of scenery. Rather than chasing another beach day, locals come here for towering live oaks draped in Spanish moss, with the beautifully preserved Wesley Mansion completing the picture

5. Don’t Spend Every Afternoon on the Beach. Paddle One of 30A’s Rarest Landscapes.

The coastal dune lakes scattered along 30A are an incredibly rare natural phenomenon found in only a handful of places around the world, yet they continue to fly under the radar for many visitors in favor of the busier beaches. If you want to follow the locals’ recommendation, especially when it comes to water activities, launch a kayak or paddleboard onto Western Lake, Camp Creek Lake, or Stallworth Lake for a completely different perspective of the coastline.

The water is calm, you’ll spot plenty of wildlife, and you won’t be competing with large beach crowds for a spot. If you happen to visit on a red-flag beach day, heading straight for the dune lakes is your best bet.

6. Don’t Follow the Longest Restaurant Line. Follow the Regulars.

Listing all the local favorite restaurants across 30A would be quite a tricky task since there are so many spots residents praise and keep coming back to. If you go around asking for their must-visit spots, you’ll hear a very different collection of names.

Here are some highly recommended local spots to add to your itinerary:

Chanticleer Eatery in Grayton Beach is a neighborhood favorite tucked just north of 30A. It’s best known for enormous salads, seafood dishes, delicious sandwiches, and oversized cookies.

Looking for something a little more refined? In Santa Rosa Beach, Basmati’s Asian Cuisine, with its covered porch overlooking Draper Lake, is a beloved spot where locals like to indulge in dishes that combine Asian flavors with Gulf Coast favorites like black grouper and red snapper. There’s also Trattoria Borago, serving homemade Italian food, where you’ll often see large local families dining together on the weekend.

For more seafood delicacies and very casual vibes, Grayton Seafood Co. and North Beach Social are also must-visit spots if you want to follow the locals’ lead.

7. Don’t Miss the Local Secrets Hidden in Plain Sight.

There are some things only the locals know, and here are a few of them:

At Trattoria Borago, for example, ask for the off-menu Priscilla Pasta, and you’ll immediately sound like a local. If The Red Bar in Grayton Beach looks too busy, follow the locals’ Plan B and head to Louis Louis, its sister restaurant, which serves the same menu with far shorter waits.

Even fishing comes with neighborhood knowledge. Rather than casting anywhere along the shoreline, experienced locals look for breaks in the sandbar where the waves aren’t breaking. Those natural outflows often attract fish moving between deeper water and the inside slough.

8. Don’t Shop When Everyone Else Does. Follow the Saturday Rule.

Want to blend in with the locals? Starting with your grocery run is a good place to begin. If you’re staying in one of 30A’s incredible vacation rentals, this local trick will save you plenty of peace of mind.

Locals know better than to walk into places like the Seaside Modica Market or the Seagrove Publix on Saturday evening, when thousands of new visitors arrive and begin stocking their vacation rentals. Instead, they simply wait until Sunday morning, when the aisles have returned to normal.

The same strategy applies when it’s time to head home. Rather than joining the long line of departing traffic on Saturday morning, residents recommend leaving early or staying for lunch before getting on Highway 331.

Sometimes knowing when to do something matters just as much as knowing where to go.
