TL;DR (Emerald Coast weekend itinerary to Destin)
- Day 1: Beach + Harbor: Henderson Beach, Boshamps lunch, HarborWalk, dinner + live music
- Day 2: Water + Reset: Crab Island, Dewey Destin’s, Mattie Kelly Park, Louisiana Lagniappe
- Day 3: Scenic + Flexible: Norriego Point, brunch spots, Grayton Beach or bay activities, Marina Cafe
Now, let’s jump into the details to help you plan a seamless Destin Florida weekend trip!
Day 1: Beach First, Harbor Later

Morning: Start Strong at Henderson Beach
Nothing like kick-starting a Destin trip with one of the things the city is most known for: its beautiful beaches. This is how any Emerald Coast weekend getaway should begin.
The top option? Henderson Beach State Park, where you’ll get that classic white sand and crystal-clear water combo.
What to do:
- Walk the boardwalk down to the beach.
- Swim or just relax for a bit.
- Take a short walk through the dunes if you want to get more active.
Tip: Plan to get there early. It gets crowded quickly, especially during high season.

Lunch: Keep It Local and Simple
After getting your dose of vitamin D and ocean breeze, it’s time to indulge in some great food to recharge for the rest of the day.
Boshamps Seafood and Oyster House, located right on Destin Harbor, is one of the most beloved spots in town for fresh seafood and waterfront dining. The atmosphere here is on point, featuring wooden decks, beach-inspired decor, great harbor views, and a friendly staff that makes you feel right at home. It’s also a great option for dinner, when the vibe picks up with live music.
Make sure to try some local favorites such as oysters boshamps, pan-roasted gulf grouper, “the original” snapper destin, and the boshamps basket.

Afternoon: HarborWalk
After lunch, you can take a break at your accommodation and plan for a late afternoon at HarborWalk, one of the main entertainment hubs in town. The whole area picks up toward sunset, and that’s when it becomes more enjoyable thanks to the cooler weather, better light, and higher energy, but still not overwhelming or noisy.
A good way to start your visit is by walking the full stretch of the boardwalk and getting acquainted with the area and what it offers. Along the way, you’ll pass small shops, casual bars, restaurants, and booking booths for activities like dolphin cruises, fishing charters, snorkeling trips, and parasailing tours.
Dinner + Night: Harbor Docks & AJ’s Club Bimini
For dinner and a few cocktails, you can stay around the harbor and keep everything within walking distance. A great option is to head to Harbor Docks, where you can indulge in fresh Gulf seafood, including sushi, and then extend the evening at AJ’s Club Bimini for drinks and live music.
Day 2: Water Day + A Reset
Morning: Crab Island (Worth the Hype)
Day 2 is your water day, and there’s no trip to Destin without experiencing Crab Island. Believe me, it lives up to the hype.
To be clear, Crab Island isn’t actually an island, but it feels like one. It’s a shallow sandbar that turns into a floating hangout spot with crystal-clear water. Most people get there by renting a pontoon boat or joining a guided tour.
What can you actually do here? Swim, float, snorkel, or just stand in waist-deep water with a drink in hand. Some people bring inflatables and anchor up for the day, while others move around to explore different sections of the sandbar. You can also rent kayaks and paddleboards. There are even floating vendors selling snacks and drinks, but you can bring your own if you prefer.
Late Lunch: Dewey Destin’s (The Original Location)
After Crab Island, Dewey Destin’s Harborside is the perfect option for a casual lunch. This local gem has a menu packed with fresh seafood treats. Their original location on Calhoun Avenue is a shack on the water where you order at a window, grab a seat, and enjoy excellent food with views of Crab Island. This is Old Florida at its best!
You can also head to their harborside location, less than a mile from the original, for a more traditional restaurant setting.
Here are some must-try dishes:
- Spicy Seafood Gumbo.
- Grilled Baskets.
- Snow Crab Legs.
- Royal Red Shrimp.
- Yellowfin Tuna.
Afternoon: Take It Easy at Mattie Kelly Park.
This is where most itineraries go wrong. Most visitors on a short trip don’t slow down and keep trying to fit as much as possible into their days. Instead of jumping into another big activity, here’s a better option for something more relaxed and local: head to Mattie Kelly Park.
This quiet spot is ideal for a break from the busier parts of Destin. You can spend a late afternoon walking the boardwalk through wetlands, looking out for birds and wildlife, and simply recharging with lovely views and serene surroundings.
Dinner: Louisiana Lagniappe
Tucked inside a residential area near the water, Louisiana Lagniappe has been a local staple for over 30 years. This local treasure is known for fresh Gulf seafood with a Creole flair and a lovely setting where you can savor their dishes with marina views.
Must-try dishes include Louisiana Crab Cakes, Oysters Lagniappe, Barbecue Jumbo Shrimp, Lagniappe Stuffed Shrimp, Jambalaya, and Grouper Pecan. If you’re not into seafood, they also offer steak options such as Filet Mignon and Ribeye. For a sweet ending, do yourself a favor and order the Key Lime Pie or the Bread Pudding.
Extra tip: If you can, ask for outdoor or window seating, views over the marina make a difference here. Reservations are a good idea in peak season, especially for dinner hours.
Day 3: Scenic Spots + Flexible Plans
Morning: Skip the Main Beach and Head to Norriego Point
Instead of repeating Day 1, go to Norriego Point. It’s quieter and gives you a slightly different view of Destin, with the harbor on one side and the Gulf just across the pass. Locals tend to come here when they want to get away from the main beach crowds without going too far.
It’s a great place to swim or just wade in calmer, shallower water, especially in the morning when things are extra quiet. You can also bring or rent a kayak or paddleboard and move around the area a bit; it’s a good spot to do it without dealing with heavy waves.
Brunch: One Good Stop
Time to recharge with more great food before the final stretch. Here are two options for you, boasting different vibes:
- Capriccio Cafe: A local Italian cafe serving lighter options such as pastries, crepes, sandwiches, and salads, along with great gourmet coffee.
- Crackings: A go-to spot for classic, heavier, all-day breakfast options and brunch. Their Benedicts and omelets are unmissable.
Afternoon: Keep It Chill or Go All In
Depending on how much energy you have left, here are two options for spending the afternoon:
Option A: Go Further (Worth It)
Drive to Grayton Beach State Park (about 30–40 minutes away). The drive alone is part of the experience, especially once you hit Scenic Highway 30A. You’ll notice it’s quieter than Destin, with less development and more open stretches of coastline.
Once you’re there, you’ll find easy parking, beach access via boardwalks, restrooms, and shaded picnic areas. The water at Grayton Beach is typically calm and clear. If you want to break things up, the park has over 4 miles of trails that cut through dunes, pine flatwoods, and coastal scrub. These are flat and easy to follow, so you don’t need to treat it like a full hike.
Extra tip: One thing that’s actually worth checking out here is Western Lake, a rare coastal dune lake.
Option B: Stay Close
If you don’t feel like driving, keep it simple and stay close. You can spend the afternoon kayaking or paddleboarding on Choctawhatchee Bay, or revisit a favorite spot from earlier.
Or, if you’re staying in one of the Destin vacation rentals, you can just stay in, cook with your loved ones, and enjoy the pool or a breezy balcony with ocean views.
Final Dinner: End It Right at Marina Cafe
If you’re looking to wrap up the day somewhere a little more elevated, Marina Cafe is a go-to spot. Sitting right on the harbor, it features a charming candlelit dining room where you can savor fresh seafood that changes daily, premium steak options, and perfectly cooked pastas if you want something different. Additionally, they offer a selection of over 100 wines that pair well with the menu.
