Getting Outside to Enjoy the Beach and Sea Creatures

If your primary purpose of visiting is to enjoy the beach, start with Okaloosa Island. This island provides a classic beach town vibe focused entirely on the water, with a huge stretch of coastline where you can spend your entire day enjoying the sun and surf.
Whenever we visit, we always pack up the car and head straight to John Beasley Park because it offers excellent facilities to keep your visit easy.
Here are a few reasons we love spending time in this specific area:
John Beasley Park: You get access to pavilions, wooden dune walkovers, and a large parking lot located right by the sand.
Okaloosa Island Pier: If you prefer casting a line, you should walk down this recognizable landmark. It stretches far out into the ocean, giving you the chance to reel in saltwater fish and take in a great view.
Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park: Located near the pier, this spot remains a highly popular attraction. The park allows you to see marine animals up close through sea lion shows and interactive dolphin encounters at their Dolphin Oasis.
You can easily spend a full afternoon learning about ocean conservation and watching rescued sea turtles swim before returning to your vacation home.
Where to Shop and Find Fun Resort Activities

If you want to spend a day off the sand, Miramar Beach shifts to a more active, resort-driven environment. This community is the commercial and entertainment hub of the area, offering plenty of ways to fill your itinerary.
Top activities to check out include:
Silver Sands Premium Outlets: Start your morning at this massive complex. It features more than 110 designer stores, and we always manage to find great deals walking through the open-air courtyards.
Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort: Golfers of all skill levels travel here to play on well-maintained greens that offer great water views. You can easily book a tee time at the championship courses located inside the sprawling resort property.
The Village of Baytowne Wharf: As the sun sets, this pedestrian-friendly village becomes the premier spot for evening entertainment. You can enjoy boutique shopping, upscale dining, and fun family activities here all in one place.
You can bring your kids to the village to tackle the ropes course and ride the zipline. After dinner, enjoy live music in the events plaza or simply watch the boats returning to the marina.
Exploring Nature and Unique Coastal Lakes

Continuing your journey, Scenic Highway 30A introduces a completely different coastal experience defined by quiet beach neighborhoods and rare ecological wonders. The communities of Dune Allen, Blue Mountain Beach, and Grayton Beach sit nestled among protected habitats. Before setting out to explore, stop at Blue Mountain Bakery to grab cinnamon rolls and coffee.
Once you have your breakfast, you can begin to explore the natural landmarks scattered along this beautiful route:
Coastal Dune Lakes: These unique bodies of water occur in only a few places worldwide, and they periodically open to exchange water directly with the Gulf of Mexico. You can rent a kayak to paddle across the calm, brackish water of Western Lake and enjoy the surrounding scenery.
Topsail Hill Preserve State Park: If you want to stay on solid ground, this park offers miles of paved trails winding through old-growth pine forests and coastal scrub. You can hike or bike these paths to spot local wildlife before catching a tram ride straight to an isolated stretch of white sand.
Grayton Beach State Park: Just down the road, this area provides even more opportunities to immerse yourself in nature. The hiking trails here guide you through an impressive landscape of massive sand dunes and salt-pruned oak trees.
If you’re a nature lover looking to escape the busy tourist centers and reconnect with the outdoors, these natural landmarks give you a true taste of the untouched coastal environment.
Grabbing a Bite to Eat and Walking Around Town
Moving further down the coastline, the landscape transitions into highly walkable communities on the eastern side of 30A. Seaside instantly stands out with its pastel-colored cottages and lively central square.
When we visit, we always grab lunch from Airstream Row. This famous collection of vintage silver food trucks serves everything from gourmet grilled cheese to fresh-pressed juices. You can eat under the shade of the Seaside Amphitheater before browsing the local boutique shops.
Just past Seaside, the towering pine trees and lush foliage of Seagrove offer a slightly quieter retreat. This historic beach neighborhood features old Florida charm, with a mix of upscale dining and classic coastal architecture.
To explore the area without fighting road traffic, we highly recommend adding these activities to your schedule:
Biking the Timpoochee Trail: You should definitely rent a bicycle to ride this 19-mile paved path. It runs right through Seagrove and seamlessly connects the entire stretch of Scenic Highway 30A. The trail allows you to safely ride past the coastal dune lakes, navigate between small coastal towns, and enjoy the ocean breeze at your own pace.
Swimming in Seacrest: At the far eastern edge of the trail, you will reach this beautiful community. It is famous for its tall palm trees and a massive lagoon pool that anchors the neighborhood.
The dining scene in Seacrest provides plenty of excellent options, ensuring you can easily find a great seafood dinner to cap off your day of biking and exploring.
Booking Boat Trips and Getting Out on the Water
Your trip remains incomplete until you actually get out on the Gulf of Mexico for a guided excursion. There are numerous ways to enjoy the ocean beyond simply swimming by the shore.
We suggest trying out these specific water activities:
Charter Boat Fishing: We recommend booking a charter boat to explore the deeper waters. The local boat captains know exactly where to take you for the best off-shore fishing experience, guaranteeing a fun day of reeling in snapper and grouper.
Snorkeling the Artificial Reefs: If you want to see local marine life up close, you should book a snorkeling tour. The coast features an extensive network of artificial reefs located just offshore, built from concrete modules and sunken vessels. These thriving underwater habitats easily attract sea turtles, dolphins, and large schools of tropical fish.
Sunset Dolphin Cruises: After a long day in the sun, you can head back to the docks to relax. The local marinas serve as the primary launching points for evening cruises and dinner tours.
One other thing you can do is walk along the waterfront to watch the charter captains unload their daily catch right in front of the local seafood restaurants.
