Pirate cruises, dolphin tours, and Crab Island fun, all in one guide. Find the best kid-friendly boat tours in Destin, plus smart tips to book and plan your day on the water.

All year round, boat tours are one of the top activities for families traveling to Destin. The good thing is the variety. It’s not just classic catamarans or sailboats for admiring the beautiful Gulf. Destin is well known for incredible sunset and dolphin cruises, pirate-themed experiences, and, since you’re in “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village,” fishing charters that make sure kids won’t be bored.

In this guide, I’ll break down some of the best kid-friendly boat tours to book this summer, what makes each one worth your time, and how to choose the right experience for your trip.

The Pirate Cruise That Turns Kids Into Crew Members

Buccaneer Pirate Cruise

If you’re traveling with younger kids, this is the one that usually gets the biggest reaction. The Buccaneer Pirate Cruise is a hit and turns a family outing into a story. You’re aboard a replica pirate ship, which is already exciting, and kids get to take part in activities like treasure hunts, sword fights, water gun battles, and a running pirate storyline that makes everything more immersive.

There’s even a below-deck portion where the story continues in a more immersive setup. It’s air-conditioned, which helps in peak summer heat, but it’s worth noting that it’s windowless, so kids prone to motion sickness might feel it.

Parents just need to relax and enjoy the stunning Gulf views while the little ones have the fun of their lives.

Crab Island and Sandbar Days

At some point, kids just want to get in the water. One of the best places for that, if you’re traveling with kids, is Crab Island. There are several tour operators and boat rentals that make it easy to plan an incredible, kid-friendly day splashing, playing, and staying active in this slice of paradise.

Crab Island Runner

Hop aboard a U.S. Coast Guard-certified boat and let the crew take care of the navigation while you focus on enjoying the water. It’s a relaxed, comfortable setup for families, especially with everything handled for you. Crab Island Runner also keeps kids entertained with shared gear like lily pads, floats, and water guns, so there’s always something to do. Along the way, little ones also love to keep an eye out for marine life.

Destin Pontoon Charters

Destin Pontoon Charters is highly suitable for children and explicitly welcomes guests of all ages on its boats. Some private pontoon options include a double-decker boat with a slide, which is a major draw for kids. They also provide lily pads, pool floats, and paddleboards for time in the water. One small detail kids love is the “shell hunt,” where captains toss shells into the water for them to find.

Chill Vibes, Dolphin Sightings, Happy Kids

Destin’s Original Sea Blaster

Beyond the chance to spot and admire dolphins swimming close to your boat, Destin’s Original Sea Blaster offers a more playful and social experience, with music in the background and a chance for kids to help “drive” the boat, which often becomes the moment they talk about later.

Southern Star Dolphin Cruise

Every experience the Southern Star Dolphin Cruise offers is designed with families in mind. From the spacious double-deck boat and shaded seating to the narrated ride that blends fun and educational moments, everyone in your group will enjoy the experience. Beyond spotting dolphins, kids will have fun watching seabirds and even taking part in small onboard moments like feeding them or joining themed cruises designed just for them.

Destin Glass Bottom Boat

This is a very unique option that kids get pretty excited about. The tour lasts about two hours and features narration to guide you through the experience. The main draw is the chance to view dolphins and other marine life directly through a glass window in the bottom of the boat.

Fishing Charters That Keep Kids Hooked

Fishing can be hit or miss with kids, but the right charter makes all the difference. Here are some of your local favorites:

Stelluna Fishing Charter

Located in the heart of Destin HarborWalk, Stelluna is a family-owned and operated fishing charter run by Captain Judah Barbee, who has children of his own and makes sure every trip is as family-friendly as it gets. They offer deep-sea fishing adventures for both seasoned anglers and first-timers.

The Stelluna is fully equipped with amenities to ensure a comfortable trip for everyone in your group, including an air-conditioned cabin, a kitchen, and entertainment options for the little ones.

Practical tips

Swoop II Fishing Charter

Swoop II Fishing Charter offers a larger “party boat” that’s ideal for families with kids, groups of friends, and first-timers. These trips create a more lively, social atmosphere on board a larger vessel compared to other fishing boats, and they’re equipped with restrooms and an air-conditioned cabin, which are especially valued by families with children who may need a break from the Florida sun.

A More Relaxed Way to Get on the Water

Cattywampus / Smile & Wave Sailing Tours

If you want to slow things down, sailing or catamaran tours are the go-to options for something more relaxed. These tours are less about engaging in a specific activity and more about enjoying the setting, with the option to add swimming or snorkeling stops along the way.

Cattywampus, based in Okaloosa Island, and Smile & Wave Sailing Tours are two of the best options.

A Few Final Tips Before You Book Your 2026 Kid-Friendly Boat Tour in Destin

1. Book early for summer 2026.

The most popular tours fill up quickly, especially pirate cruises and Crab Island trips. If you already know your dates, lock something in ahead of time. Try to schedule it early in your trip so you have flexibility in case of weather changes.

2. Go in the morning when possible.

Mornings usually mean calmer water and cooler temperatures. Kids tend to have more energy earlier in the day, and you’re less likely to deal with strong sun or choppy conditions.

3. Pack more than you think you need.

Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, hats, and a towel. For younger kids, a change of clothes is always a good idea. If you’re heading to Crab Island or a sandbar, consider water shoes and a small waterproof bag for essentials.

4. Think about motion sickness ahead of time.

Even on calm days, some kids are more sensitive than others. If you’re unsure, choose larger, more stable boats or shorter tours. Seating on open decks also helps compared to enclosed areas.

5. Check what’s included before booking.

Some tours provide drinks, floats, or gear, while others don’t. Knowing this in advance helps you avoid overpacking or, worse, showing up without something you expected to have.

6. Match the tour to your kids’ energy level, not yours.

High-energy kids will love pirate cruises or interactive tours. More relaxed kids might prefer dolphin cruises or sandbar days. Picking the right pace makes a bigger difference than the type of tour itself.

7. Plan around breaks and downtime.

Boat tours can be exciting, but they also take a lot out of younger kids. Avoid stacking too many activities on the same day, and leave room for rest before or after.

TL;DR (Emerald Coast weekend itinerary to Destin)

Now, let’s jump into the details to help you plan a seamless Destin Florida weekend trip!

Day 1: Beach First, Harbor Later

Henderson Beach State Park

Morning: Start Strong at Henderson Beach

Nothing like kick-starting a Destin trip with one of the things the city is most known for: its beautiful beaches. This is how any Emerald Coast weekend getaway should begin.

The top option? Henderson Beach State Park, where you’ll get that classic white sand and crystal-clear water combo.

What to do:

Tip: Plan to get there early. It gets crowded quickly, especially during high season.

Lunch: Keep It Local and Simple

After getting your dose of vitamin D and ocean breeze, it’s time to indulge in some great food to recharge for the rest of the day.

Boshamps Seafood and Oyster House, located right on Destin Harbor, is one of the most beloved spots in town for fresh seafood and waterfront dining. The atmosphere here is on point, featuring wooden decks, beach-inspired decor, great harbor views, and a friendly staff that makes you feel right at home. It’s also a great option for dinner, when the vibe picks up with live music.

Make sure to try some local favorites such as oysters boshamps, pan-roasted gulf grouper, “the original” snapper destin, and the boshamps basket.

Afternoon: HarborWalk

After lunch, you can take a break at your accommodation and plan for a late afternoon at HarborWalk, one of the main entertainment hubs in town. The whole area picks up toward sunset, and that’s when it becomes more enjoyable thanks to the cooler weather, better light, and higher energy, but still not overwhelming or noisy.

A good way to start your visit is by walking the full stretch of the boardwalk and getting acquainted with the area and what it offers. Along the way, you’ll pass small shops, casual bars, restaurants, and booking booths for activities like dolphin cruises, fishing charters, snorkeling trips, and parasailing tours.

Dinner + Night: Harbor Docks & AJ’s Club Bimini

For dinner and a few cocktails, you can stay around the harbor and keep everything within walking distance. A great option is to head to Harbor Docks, where you can indulge in fresh Gulf seafood, including sushi, and then extend the evening at AJ’s Club Bimini for drinks and live music.

Day 2: Water Day + A Reset

Morning: Crab Island (Worth the Hype)

Day 2 is your water day, and there’s no trip to Destin without experiencing Crab Island. Believe me, it lives up to the hype.

To be clear, Crab Island isn’t actually an island, but it feels like one. It’s a shallow sandbar that turns into a floating hangout spot with crystal-clear water. Most people get there by renting a pontoon boat or joining a guided tour.

What can you actually do here? Swim, float, snorkel, or just stand in waist-deep water with a drink in hand. Some people bring inflatables and anchor up for the day, while others move around to explore different sections of the sandbar. You can also rent kayaks and paddleboards. There are even floating vendors selling snacks and drinks, but you can bring your own if you prefer.

Late Lunch: Dewey Destin’s (The Original Location)

After Crab Island, Dewey Destin’s Harborside is the perfect option for a casual lunch. This local gem has a menu packed with fresh seafood treats. Their original location on Calhoun Avenue is a shack on the water where you order at a window, grab a seat, and enjoy excellent food with views of Crab Island. This is Old Florida at its best!

You can also head to their harborside location, less than a mile from the original, for a more traditional restaurant setting.

Here are some must-try dishes:

Afternoon: Take It Easy at Mattie Kelly Park.

This is where most itineraries go wrong. Most visitors on a short trip don’t slow down and keep trying to fit as much as possible into their days. Instead of jumping into another big activity, here’s a better option for something more relaxed and local: head to Mattie Kelly Park.

This quiet spot is ideal for a break from the busier parts of Destin. You can spend a late afternoon walking the boardwalk through wetlands, looking out for birds and wildlife, and simply recharging with lovely views and serene surroundings.

Dinner: Louisiana Lagniappe

Tucked inside a residential area near the water, Louisiana Lagniappe has been a local staple for over 30 years. This local treasure is known for fresh Gulf seafood with a Creole flair and a lovely setting where you can savor their dishes with marina views.

Must-try dishes include Louisiana Crab Cakes, Oysters Lagniappe, Barbecue Jumbo Shrimp, Lagniappe Stuffed Shrimp, Jambalaya, and Grouper Pecan. If you’re not into seafood, they also offer steak options such as Filet Mignon and Ribeye. For a sweet ending, do yourself a favor and order the Key Lime Pie or the Bread Pudding.

Extra tip: If you can, ask for outdoor or window seating, views over the marina make a difference here. Reservations are a good idea in peak season, especially for dinner hours.

Day 3: Scenic Spots + Flexible Plans

Morning: Skip the Main Beach and Head to Norriego Point

Instead of repeating Day 1, go to Norriego Point. It’s quieter and gives you a slightly different view of Destin, with the harbor on one side and the Gulf just across the pass. Locals tend to come here when they want to get away from the main beach crowds without going too far.

It’s a great place to swim or just wade in calmer, shallower water, especially in the morning when things are extra quiet. You can also bring or rent a kayak or paddleboard and move around the area a bit; it’s a good spot to do it without dealing with heavy waves.

Brunch: One Good Stop

Time to recharge with more great food before the final stretch. Here are two options for you, boasting different vibes:

Afternoon: Keep It Chill or Go All In

Depending on how much energy you have left, here are two options for spending the afternoon:

Option A: Go Further (Worth It)

Drive to Grayton Beach State Park (about 30–40 minutes away). The drive alone is part of the experience, especially once you hit Scenic Highway 30A. You’ll notice it’s quieter than Destin, with less development and more open stretches of coastline.

Once you’re there, you’ll find easy parking, beach access via boardwalks, restrooms, and shaded picnic areas. The water at Grayton Beach is typically calm and clear. If you want to break things up, the park has over 4 miles of trails that cut through dunes, pine flatwoods, and coastal scrub. These are flat and easy to follow, so you don’t need to treat it like a full hike.

Extra tip: One thing that’s actually worth checking out here is Western Lake, a rare coastal dune lake.

Option B: Stay Close

If you don’t feel like driving, keep it simple and stay close. You can spend the afternoon kayaking or paddleboarding on Choctawhatchee Bay, or revisit a favorite spot from earlier.

Or, if you’re staying in one of the Destin vacation rentals, you can just stay in, cook with your loved ones, and enjoy the pool or a breezy balcony with ocean views.

Final Dinner: End It Right at Marina Cafe

If you’re looking to wrap up the day somewhere a little more elevated, Marina Cafe is a go-to spot. Sitting right on the harbor, it features a charming candlelit dining room where you can savor fresh seafood that changes daily, premium steak options, and perfectly cooked pastas if you want something different. Additionally, they offer a selection of over 100 wines that pair well with the menu.
